Waitlist

A waitlist is a page that collects email addresses for a product people cannot use yet. It is a legitimate validation tool and it is not a launch, which is the distinction that trips makers up when they try to submit one.

Most serious directories reject waitlists explicitly. Product Hunt’s featuring guidelines exclude waitlisted products alongside directories, templates, courses and vaporware. This site rejects them under the reason code waitlist_only, and the same submission is welcome the moment there is a product behind the form.

The reason is simple. A directory listing is a permanent page asserting that a product exists and does something. If the product does not exist, the page is a promise, and a directory full of promises is worth nothing to the people reading it.

One important exception in the benchmark: BetaList accepts pre-launch and recently launched startups by design, which is its whole positioning. If you genuinely are pre-launch, that is the shape of directory to look for, and the rest of the category will be available to you once you ship.

Where a waitlist does help is in the weeks before a launch, since a list of people who asked to be told is the best launch-day audience most makers will ever have.
