A best-of page is a curated roundup for a query like “best CLI productivity tools”. It is the highest-volume informational shape in the category and the one most likely to be drawn on by AI answer engines, because it is already organized as an answer.
The format is well established. MicroLaunch uses “Best {Tag} Tools and Software” as an H1 with counted subheadings underneath, and Uneed runs best-of pages by tag as one half of its programmatic core.
What separates a roundup that ranks from one that does not is editorial substance. A bare list of listings ordered by vote count is a database query with a heading. A page that ranks has an introduction explaining who it is for, stated selection criteria, a reason next to each entry, an honest note about what was left out and why, and a visible last-updated date.
